Starting in 2020, an international group of scientists began assessing current standards for measuring shortwave and longwave radiation at sea. Finding that many land-based best practices are unsuitable for marine environments, the group used community workshops and collaborative writing projects to compile alternative best practices applicable to a variety of marine observing platforms. Convened under the OASIS (observing air-sea interaction strategy) program of the UN Ocean Decade, the surface radiation best practices group has been one of the standout successes of the program so far.

In this session, we will look at the current status of surface radiation best practices, the next steps, and lessons for other similar groups. While the discussion will center on processes at the air-sea interface relevant to OASIS, we hope the lessons will be valuable for all in the OBPS community.
